Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 Manual Lens / Tech Art Adapter Sony A7R3 Review

With the introduction of the Sony Full Frame Mirrorless 3rd Generation family, the AF performance and picture quality exceeded the performance of the DSLR, and many users, including myself, are moving to the Sony A7M3 or A7R3 and A9. In particular, as the performance of the phase difference AF point is greatly improved, various manual lenses can be used conveniently, and Voigtlander products are being sold out.

Sony's standard single-lens for full-frame mirrorless is high in price and bulky compared to other 35 mm or 50 mm products. So the standard single lens I chose was the Voigtlander NOKTON 40mm F1.2, and I purchased the TechArt LM-EA7 adapter, which allows manual lenses to be used as AF.

The Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 lens is available in Leica mounts and Sony FE mounts, respectively. However, it is quite cumbersome to manually adjust the focus. For the Leica mount, the adapter can be used with AF to add convenience.

The size of the lens is very compact compared to Sony Zoom lenses and is small enough to be comparable to the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. Weight is somewhat heavy with iron construction.

The TechArt adapter allows the manual lens to be used as an AF. This makes it easy to use focusing as well as changing mounts. In addition, the minimum focal length is further shortened to provide a favorable advantage for close-up.

The lens is attached to the adapter. A little thickness is added, and the bottom part is heavily attached to the structure.

It is combined with Sony A7R3 camera. Due to the lower structure, the height of the camera is lower than the floor. It is recommended to use a separate case.

The aperture value must be set manually via the lens. If you set it to F2.0 inside the camera, you can use the aperture priority mode without problems. The TechArt adapter can update the firmware to a smartphone via a Bluetooth connection and experience very fast and accurate focusing when updating the latest firmware.

A leather case fitted. It can cover the height difference caused by the lower structure of TechArt adapter and can be used stably.

The maximum aperture diaphragm value is F1.2, which makes it possible to express very shallow depths. This makes it possible to focus more on people, such as people, and adds a unique sense of space through the 40mm focal length.

Photos taken with Sony's A7R3 with a Boy Grinder 40mm F1.2 lens. The TechArt LM-EA7 adapter allows for a more satisfactory use of the manual lens for convenient AF. It is judged to be a good combination with a compact standard lens full of emotion in the third generation full frame mirrorless body of Sony. End the reviews.
